Previous studies demonstrated that a previously identified phosphatase, P-1, which is tightly associated with the inner membrane of human red blood cells, is a dual-specificity phosphatase. The dual specificity of P-1 towards both serine/threonine and tyrosine residues is unusual in nature. This led us to investigate its site of action in the inner membrane. As P-1 is shown to have sequence homology to the serine/threonine specific protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B (PTP-1B), we used the highly specific anti-PTP-1B to examine the localization of P-1 in red blood cells. Immunogold electron microscopy studies revealed that P-1 was localized exclusively to the inner leaflet of the cell membrane. Our results demonstrate for the first time a three-site phosphatase in the red blood cell membrane which may be involved in signal transduction events.Effects of general anesthesia and myotomy on the acute stress response during laparoscopic hysterectomy.
The stress response to surgery varies among individuals, and body size and anesthesia technique are often considered to influence the stress response. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of general anesthesia and surgical stress on the acute stress response during laparoscopic hysterectomy. Thirty-two patients scheduled for laparoscopic hysterectomy and 32 control women were enrolled in the study. In the general anesthesia group (n = 16), patients received general anesthesia using propofol, fentanyl, and pancuronium.
